  • Echites scholaris Linnaeus, Systema Naturae, ed. 12, 2: 190; Mantissa Plantarum: 53. 1767. "Habitat in India." RCN: 1728. Lectotype (Huber in Abeywickrama, Revised Handb. Fl. Ceylon 1(1): 12. 1973): Herb. Linn. No. 302.2 (LINN). Current name: Alstonia scholaris (L.) R. Br. (Apocynaceae). Note: Monachino (in Pacific Sci. 3: 147. 1949) provided a somewhat confused type statement, quoting Robert Brown who approved the identity of Rumphius’ 1: t. 45 (which was not, however, part of Linnaeus’ protologue) and cast doubt on that of Rumphius’ 2: t. 82 (which was). Monachino stated that Linnaeus’ name was "based on" Lignum scholare of Rumphius but noted that t. 82 "diverges widely from A. scholaris, but is not adequate for precise identification", while agreeing that there was "strong justification" for Browne’s identification of it with A. spectabilis R. Br. Despite this, Monachino applied the Linnaean name in its traditional sense, suggesting that he was not accepting Rumphius’ t. 82 as the type. Although Forster (in Austral. Syst. Bot. 5: 751. 1992) accepted Monachino as having typified the name, the latter’s statements seem contrary to Art. 7.11 as the type was not "definitely accepted as such by the typifying author". Huber’s 1973 choice of type is therefore accepted here.
