- Gossypium herbaceum Linnaeus, Species Plantarum 2: 693. 1753. "Habitat in America." RCN: 5074. Lectotype (Fryxell in Brittonia 20: 378. 1968): Herb. Linn. No. 874.1 (LINN). Current name: Gossypium herbaceum L. (Malvaceae). Note: Watt (Wild Cult. Cotton Pl. World: 157, pl. 24. 1907) discussed both 874.1 (LINN) and the Clifford material as “types”. However, these collections are not part of a single gathering, so Art. 9.15 does not apply, and he did not make a choice of type.
