- Neotibicen tibicen tibicen (Linnaeus, 1758) [Cicada] tibicen Linnaeus 1758: 436 . (America) Remarks. The taxon Cicada tibicen Linnaeus, 1758 was described based on a specimen currently in the Linnean collection at Uppsala University that was designated as the lectotype for the taxon (Sanborn 2008). Linnaeus (1758) listed Cicada tibicen as inhabiting America and also referenced the diagram of Merian (1705) as representative of the species. The issue was confused further when Linnaeus (1764) expanded his description of the taxon that clearly shows he was using the specimen now designated as the lectotype, but also referenced its habitat as Carolina and Surinam (sic). This mistakenly led authors to consider the taxon as inhabiting both North and South America. As outlined above, the references to Cicada tibicen or Diceroprocta tibicen from South America are considered to be misidentifications of Fidicina mannifera. Cicada tibicen is currently classified as Neotibicen tibicen tibicen (Linnaeus, 1758) (Hill et al. 2015) and is here removed from the cicada fauna of Suriname. Distribution. Neotibicen tibicen tibicen is distributed over much of eastern North America (Sanborn & Phillips 2013).
