  • tancrei Graeser, 1888 Figs 13, 14 Cymatophora Tancrei Graeser, 1888, Berliner entomologische Zeitschrift 32: 151. Type locality: “aus Raddefka” [now Radde, a village in Obluch’e Region of the Judish Autonomy]. Present status: Nemacerota tancrei (Graeser, 1888): Tetheini or Polydactylini. Taxonomic remarks: The oldest valid name for the moths of the tancrei -group (Polydactylini sensu Werny 1966). Nomenclatural notes: The original type series includes only two males collected on 5. August: “Zwei aus Raddefka herstammende ♂♂ wurden mir durch Herrn R. Tancré eingesandt; beide Stücke sind am 5. August gefangen”. A specimen in ZMHU was labeled “Type” by R. Püngeler and was considered a holotype of the taxon by László & al. (2007: 127, 128). This cannot be correct, since no single specimen was originally selected by the author from the syntypes as a type. Moreover, this specimen was collected on 5 August 1888. Part 1 of Band 32 together with page 151 of the ‘ Berliner entomologische Zeitschrift ’ was published in early August of the same year [‘Anfang August 1888 ’—see fig. 14] according to the information on the title page. Thus, if this specimen was ever investigated by Graeser at all, it must have been later than the date of publication of the description of the taxon; therefore it cannot be treated as part of the original type series and has to lose its type status. Moreover, it was obtained by R. Püngeler directly from R. Tancré on “5.05” (ink inscription in Püngeler’s hand on the reverse of the label) and most probably was not seen by L. Graeser. No original R. Tancré materials were found in ZISP; the syntypes in question are therefore not present here. Nor are they present in the collection of the zoological Museum and Institute in Hamburg (Weidner 1974) where some of Graeser’s types are deposited, or in the collection of the Zoological Research Museum Alexander Koenig in Bonn where some materials from R. Tancré are deposited. For the present the conclusion must be that the type series is lost.
