- The paper entitled "Hydroxychloroquine and azithromycin as a treatment of COVID-19: results of an open-label non-randomized clinical trial", authored by Gautret et al and published in the International Journal of Antimicrobial Agents [Int. J. Antimicrob. Agents (2020) DOI:10.1016/j.ijantimicag.2020.105949.], created a major controversy as it attracted the world's attention because it promised a prophylactic for the treatment of COVID-19 and the potential eradications of SARS-COV-2. Both the US President, Donald Trump and the French President, Emmanuel Macron touted Hydroxycholoroquine as a game changer while the majority of Scientific Researchers questioned the findings and the rigor of the paper. An examination of the published paper revealed that it was full of unanswered questions, including (i) the way the subjects were recruited, (ii) the choice of protocol, (iii) the non-randomness of the protocol, and (iv) total contradiction with other clinical trials. It is submitted that the paper by Gautret et al. is a "travail baclee" meant to gather attention as opposed to a serious scientific exercise. Whether the authors committed any forms of Scientific Misconduct is debatable until all the data is made available to the public".
