- This paper aims at presenting a reflection on the transformation of language studies and its interfaces since the consolidation of the cognitive revolution in the 20th century. Specifically, we debate the contribution of investigating deviant grammars, such as the ones from individuals with Dementia of the Alzheimer's Type, for the study of language as a mental system. To that end, we present, in a historical perspective, the first discoveries of speech-language pathology cases in Neuroscience and its unfolding for studies on language and its interface with other cognitive functions. Finally, we discuss the relationship between neurolinguistic studies and theoretical proposals on language. Este artigo tem como objetivo apresentar uma reflexão sobre a transformação dos estudos da linguagem e suas interfaces ocorrida a partir da consolidação da revolução cognitiva do século XX. Especificamente, debate-se a contribuição da investigação de gramáticas desviantes, como a de indivíduos acometidos pela Demência do Tipo Alzheimer, para o estudo da linguagem como sistema mental. Para tanto, apresentam-se, em uma perspectiva histórica, as primeiras descobertas da neurociência sobre casos de patologia da linguagem e seus desdobramentos para os estudos sobre a linguagem e sua interface com outras funções cognitivas. Por fim, discutem-se a relação entre estudos neurolinguísticos e propostas teóricas acerca da linguagem.
