- Both gas and electricity networks will play a key role in supporting the uptake of new technologies and meeting decarbonization challenges. In this regard, the integration of the electricity and gas sectors can optimise the assessment and usage of both grids, whilst continuing to meet the European energy policy objectives of sustainability, security of energy supply and competitiveness. Thus, the report aims to review the existing interconnection capacity between the island of Ireland and neighbouring territories, and new interconnection projects that have been proposed by several consortia. Both electricity and gas interconnections are evaluated and their potential for facilitating energy exports is discussed.
