- This study aimed at detecting obesity prevalence among men with mental deficiency and associating this prevalence with frequency and the duration of physical activity. It was carried out with a group of ninety-one men aged between 14 and 44 from Distrito Federal – Brazil enrolled at APAE, AMPARE, and Pestalozzi. The analysis of body composition was based on the methodology of skin folds fatness. This study concludes that there wasn’t significant difference among the averages of body fat percentage for the individuals with mental deficiency within the 14-25 and 26-44 year olds groups (p=0.107 and p=0.306, respectively) who practiced physical activity once a week, compared with those that practiced three times a week. The average of body mass index (BMI) was significantly larger in the group 14-25 year olds than in the group 26-44 year olds (p=0.0018). It wasn’t possible to confirm that the prevalence of obesity among individuals that practiced physical activity during 50 minutes per session was larger than those that practiced during 90 minutes. The prevalence of obesity was 15.5% among individuals that stayed at the institution for two periods of the day and 25% among those that stayed only for one period. Besides, the prevalence of obesity (17.6%) was larger than in the general population (4.3% and 8.3%, IBGE, 1974–1975 and 1989). Individuals between 14 and 25 years old presented smaller prevalence of obesity (10.9%) than individuals between 26 and 44 years old (27.8%).
