- The analysis of the current state and prospects of the existing system of the atmospheric air monitoring development in Ukraine is carried out. The main tasks that the authors are working on in the framework of the grant for young scientists of NAS of Ukraine in 2019 on the topic "Mathematical and software tools for optimization of the network of posts for observation of atmospheric air pollution in the technogenically loaded territories of Ukraine" are outlined. This paper presents the results of solving the first task of the project, namely, a critical analysis of existing approaches to the design of new and optimization of existing networks for monitoring the state of the atmospheric air. The advantages and disadvantages of each approach are described. Prospects for using the project results were noted.
