  • The study attempts to evaluate the “presence” of musical instruments in Artur Gorovei’s collection of riddles in the book „Cimiliturile românilor”. Starting from the reading of the texts in this collection, we find that the sound instruments, in their riddled form, are a stable component in the author’s work. As the purpose of the riddle is to test the agility of the mind to unravel the enigma of the stated content, the identification of the musical instruments is induced by the recourse to various artistic and stylistic processes (allegory, assonance, comparison, enumeration, epithet, hyperbole, metaphor, personification etc.). By the descriptions found in A. Gorovei’s volume of riddles, it was possible to recognize a rich organological nomenclature, in which all instrumental families, except the membranophones, are represented through general stipulations, notifications of organological conformation, coded references on the operation of instruments in everyday life, etc. At the same time, the radiograph of the organologic palette, observed through A. Gorovei’s collection, denotes the presence of certain musical symbols, the effects of the collective genius fantasy. The musical instruments find an appropriate reflection in riddles, outlining more clearly the ludic character, the plasticity of images and the unmistakable message of this short species of oral culture.
