  • Boerhaave syndrome is a rare but life-threatening injury associated with an overall mortality rate ranging from 20 to 70% depending on the onset of treatment. Prompt recognition and initiation of treatment of esopheagal perforations has long been recognized as being essential for a favorable outcome. However, in spite of dramatic clinical presentation, diagnosis is delayed in over 50% of patients. Therefore, constant awareness about this serious surgical condition is mandatory. We present a case of spontaneous rupture of the esophagus treated by subtotal esophagectomy and a review of the current literature.
