- Birds – Comprida Island (Aves – Ilha Comprida in Portuguese and English) is the result of studies that have been developed on Comprida Island (Ilha Comprida means Long Island in Portuguese) for the last 20 years. Since 1992, the author has developed research on the waterfowlpopulation dynamics and its community ecology. During the period from 1998 to 2001, there was great support of the Comprida Island municipality – at the time led by Décio Ventura –, which enabled an accurate survey and study on the waterfowl group, and served as incentive for collaboration with other institutions such as Instituto de Pesca – ip (Fishery Institute), subordinate to the Agência Paulista de Tecnologia dos Agronegócios – apta (São Paulo State Agency for Agribusiness Technology) of the Secretaria de Agricultura e Abastecimento do Estado de São Paulo – saasp (São Paulo State Secretariat of Agriculture and Supply), Defesa Agropecuária (São Paulo State Secretariat of Agricultural Protection) of saasp and the Estação Quarentenária de Cananeia –eqc – (Quarantine Station of Cananeia), under the Ministério da Agricultura, Pecuária e Abastecimento – mapa (Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food Supply). It is high time that we made a guide to identify the birds that are found on the islands of São Paulo State, because there is nothing to fill that gap. This book is the first attempt to help researchers and bird watchers interested in the study of birds of Comprida Island and of the southern coast of São Paulo State. Our intention was to list 50 bird species that are the most abundant and the easiest to be observed and studied in different ecosystems that occur on the island, keeping the public informed.
