  • The acute toxicity of effluent water from the production of petroleum in the Brasilian State of Sergipe was evaluated in Poecilia vivipara (Cyprinodontiformes) and Artemia salina (Crustacea). The animals were exposed to different concentrations of the effluent for a period of up to 96 hours. Five replicates of ten individuals of P. vivipara were exposed to 1%, 5%, 10%, 20%, 30% and 50% dilutions of effluent water. The control group did not receive effluent water. Dead individuals were counted after 24, 48, 72 and 96 hours of exposure. The LC50s were 32.11% after 24 hours of exposure, 24.57% in 48 hours, 22.77% in 72 hours and 19.98% in 96 hours. The LC50 interval for A. salina was 28.24% to 29.12% during 24 hours of exposure.
