- Previous studies have revealed that means of social communication and media products, in general, play an important role in society, given the fact that the messages they convey onto society may create, reinforce and spread stereotypes, stigmas and social representation. Besides that, the majority of studies on marketing and consumer behaviour have focused primarily on Caucasian individuals, and neglecting ethnic minorities individuals. Therefore, the present study has consisted on the development of a bibliographic survey – alongside the timeframe comprised between 1965 to 2011 – of Brazilian academic studies that have addressed the issue Afro-descendant individuals presence and social representation on means of social communication, aimed at making a critical analysis of the possible congruence of such picture of low attention of the academy towards the phenomenon. The results of the study have clearly shown that, despite the importance of marketing studies addressing the mentioned phenomenon, the Brazilian academy has not given the appropriate attention and room to the debate of this subject matter, given the fact that it has been identified a large concentration of studies made by a handful of authors, few graduate schools a also few forums that have opened room for their publication with certain degree of regularity.
