- “Reports of our death have been greatly exaggerated,” says the UCLA Social Science Data Archive. It’s true: the SSDA is not the same as it always was, and that is a success story. In this presentation, we will report on the process we have used to begin transforming the respected Archive from a single purpose entity into a developing data science center serving the whole campus. We will articulate the change in research funding and standards that have mandated a new set of services, and more importantly a new dynamic organization that can develop collaboratively in conjunction with research trends and methodologies. As a data science center, our focus becomes the services that support data creation, interpretation, and dissemination regardless of discipline or methodology. In this presentation, you’ll get to see inside our peer benchmarking task force and get a peek inside the internal wranglings of a research university grappling with burgeoning research needs. In sum, you’ll find out why we made this change, and why you’ll want to make sure data science is part of your portfolio too.
