- The purpose of the present article was to highlight the «through features” of the fiction’s progress in the period of “timelessness” in the works of L.Y. Gurevich. The analysis of the writer’s prose in the literary context of the era has confirmed the presence of the general laws of the development of Russian fiction, namely: the stereotype nature, schematic basic plot turns, excessive detailed elaboration, descriptive characteristics of the characters, open author’s evaluation, primitivism of expressive poetic technique, focus on satisfaction the taste of a certain category of readers. The main theme of Russian fi ction of the last quarter of the XIX century was «a small man», but, unlike the classics, the fiction writers, including L.Y. Gurevich, didn’t claim to large generalizations, but they addressed to spiritual quest of their characters. Fiction of that period chose its hero «not the hero», which was reflected in the semantics of the titles of the fiction works. In our view, the very formulation of the problem of the spiritual quest of the hero in the era of «timelessness» was a strong creative side of L.Y. Gurevich and made her creative heritage socially and historically significant.
