  • We study the stellar halos of Milky Way-type galaxies in the Eagle simulations and in a new set of zoomed Milky Way-mass galaxies resimulated at higher resolution. We analyse the surface brightness, metallicity, colour and age profiles of simulated halos - both across the major and minor axes - and find good agreement with observations. We find that the observed properties of stellar halos can be explained by a mixture of in situ and accreted components. We suggest that observations of stellar halos need to target also the major axes of galaxies (where most of the in situ halo stars reside), in order to get a complete picture of stellar halos of galaxies.
