- Manuel del Socorro Rodríguez is presented in this paper as a foundational figure concerning the formulation of the Colombian literary canon. We conclude that his essay, from 1792, “Satisfacción a un juicio poco exacto sobre la literatura y buen gusto, antiguo y actual, de los naturales de la ciudad de Santafé de Bogotá” is the first record of the history of literature in Colombia, and one of the first systematic projects to configure the canon of any national literature in Spanish America. Since such canon was formulated in a colonial environment, the lack of legitimation by a national community as a whole is therefore considered.
