- This article proposes an initial exploration of the income and wealth of the nobility of Coimbra between the eighteenth and nineteenth century. Through the analysis of different types of sources the author seeks to identify trends in the local context and draw some parallels with the evolution of other national spaces. This analysis of local houses of nobility covers a universe chronologically situated between the end of the seventeenth and eighteenth century and aims to clarify the formation of estates and its evolution, which are closely bonded to primogeniture and marital choices. It is also a key objective the comprehension of the impact of personal decisions in the family fortune and its social placement. Concerning this objective, the author analyses the course of a family from the fidalguia rooted in Coimbra and nearby localities (os Garridos), during the second half of eighteenth century.
