- Since the pioneering works by Vandakurov (1967), Shibahashi (1979) and Tassoul (1980), asymptotic analysis has been of fundamental use in the study of stellar oscillations. This is a theoretical framework to understand the physics of the oscillations under the assumption that the wavelength of the constituent waves are much shorter than the scale height of the background structure. The recent detection of solar-like oscillations in red giant stars provides another case for the application of the framework. In this paper, it is described how the asymptotic analysis can be extended to the case of the red giant oscillations in order to understand their unique characteristics and the internal structure of the stars. The analysis turns out to be useful to extract detailed information from the complicated frequency spectra, which have been obtained by the recent space missions.
