- Knowledge of methane spectroscopy is crucial for the interpretation of atmospheric observations, including those of the outer planets. An overview will be given of recent results from high resolution laboratory studies of CH 4 and CH 3 D in the 1.6 to 200 micron spectral region. Line intensities and line shape parameters will be emphasized, and methane parameters available from websites and public databases will be discussed. Finally, future needs for laboratory studies will be summarized. The research at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), California Institute of Technology, was performed under contract with National Aeronautics and Space Administration.
