  • LSST represents a new frontier in data-intensive astronomy: a nimble, wide-field telescope equipped with a 3.2 Gigapixel camera, starting in 2022 it will carry out a ten year survey programme to generate the widest, deepest image of the universe to date. In the process, it will generate 500 PB of image data and 50 PB of catalogues, while issuing real-time alerts of 10 million astronomical transients per night. End users will build on these capabilities by executing code directly within LSST data centres. I will discuss the system design and the approaches taken to make this cutting-edge science possible.
