  • The article revealed to specifics of the migration processes that took place in Kharkov in the early twentieth century and for a long time. The ethnic composition of the population, who arrived in the region, its occupation and participation in the economic and trade development of the Kharkov region are analyzed. It was found that immigrants of different ethnicity and confession were involved in the development of industry, trade, handicraft and processing enterprises. They opened their own or institution or worked in them as a skilled workforce. Analyzes the features and effects of migratory movements before and during the First World War, are defined the number and nationality of the refugees who came to the region for permanent or temporary residence, their occupation, the city and the region from which they came, and so on. Reveals the role of Kharkov as strong economic and trade center of the Russian Empire, which has developed rapidly due to large-scale migration, are revealed are economic and social impact of migration movements in the early twentieth century. When using archival sources and historical materials, the author studied the number of different ethnic groups, who arrived in Kharkiv and Kharkiv region before World War. Analyzed occupation and types of crafts of ethnic groups who settled in the Kharkov province. The role of ethnic minorities in trade and industry are identified. Using historical data, the author analyzes the dynamics of the stay of refugees in all settlements of the region and its ethnic composition. The number of refugees at the end of 1915 reached 116 thousand 794 people who came from Poland, the Baltic States, Galicia, Transcarpathia other places. It was found that at the beginning of 1917 by refugees who settled in Kharkov province, the number of ethnic minorities increased by 15% and reached 26% of the total population. Thus, the migration processes in the First World War greatly influenced the ethnic composition of the population and the economic life of the region.
