  • Almost each museum collection is based on private collections which found their way into museums under various historical and political circumsances. However, very little information about their former owners, if at all, is provided either on display cards or in museum catalogs. Such disregard for art collectors does not motivate modern collectors to cooperate with state-owned museums. Even though collectors understand the need to preserve and promote their collections they do not want their collection items to end up in museum repositories or their names to be erased from history together with inventory books. The task of museum staff and art critics is to retrieve collectors’ names and to promote collectors as guardians of cultural legacy of certain ages. The purposeof this study is to highlight the forgotten and unknown biographical information about the family of scholars and collectors – Oleksandr Illyich Brodsky and Vera Saveliivna Brodska, whose art collection, after their death, partly resurfaced in the National Museum “Kyiv Art Gallery”, as well as for the fi rst time to publish biographical data and information about V. S. Brodska, who was an ardent porcelain collector, and to describe her collection in the museum. In addition, the study sets out to provide a general overview of the family’s art collection, as well as to break down porcelain items by factories which manufactured them for further study. The research methodologywas to systematically analyze known archival sources. Individual works of art and literature from the Brodskys’ collection were classifi ed and counted up. The principle of simulation was used to get an idea of how the collection might have looked before. At the fi nal stage, empirical research methods such as interviews, surveys, etc. were used. In the course of the research, discussions were held with the employees of the L. V. Pisarzhevsky Institute of Physical Chem-istry. Furthermore, questionnaires, autobiographical information and letters of O. I. Brodsky and V. S. Brodska-Sheremetieva, which are kept in Ukraine’s archival institutions, were thoroughly studied. As a result, for the fi rst time new biographical facts about the members of the Brodskys’ family were uncovered such as information about Oleksandr Illyich family, the lifespan of Vera Saveliivna, her degree and work certifi cates, etc. The unsystematic photo album showing the family’s life and travel destinations was revised and put in good order. Also, the author identifi ed the circle of contacts and artists with whom the family was in touch such as Sosiura, Hmyrya, Masalsky, Obraztsov and others, which is evidenced by photos, letters, and gift inscriptions. The author counted the card index of Brodsky’s gramophone re-cord collection consisting of more than 850 titles, including Bach, Beethoven, Berlioz, Brahms, Wagner, Verdi, Vivaldi, Handel, Glazunov, Glier, Glinka, Debussy, List, Mendelssohn, Mozart, Offenbach, Paganini, Prokofi ev, Ravel, Rachmaninov, Rossini, Ramo, Saint-Sans, Scriabin, Stravinsky, Falk, Frank, Tchai-kovsky, Chopin, Shimanovsky, Strauss, Shostakovich, Schubert, Schumann and others. The fate of this collection is unknown. The study refers to the little-known Brodsky’s book collection which, according to the family friends, included all Pushkin’s lifetime works, as well as posthumous editions, additions, and references. Interestingly, the collection was later purchased by the writer’s famous connoisseur Ya. I. Berdychevsky. As is known, the article presents this information for the fi rst time, since the founder of the O. S. Pushkin Museum in Kyiv has never mentioned this purchase. The study contains materials on museum displays of paintings from the collections of Korovin, Kustodiev and others. An overview was made of porcelain items from the scholars’ col-lection which were received in 1980, that is, after the death of V. S. Brodska. Thus, it became known that items of the following plants have been preserved to this day: the Imperial Porcelain Factory – 7 items, the Popov plant – 10 items, Gardner fac-tory – 21, Safronov factory – 3, Batenin factory – 3, Fomin – 2, the Kornilov brothers – 8, the Novykh brothers – 4, Musakov, Huzheva and Gulin factories – 1 item from each, Kiev experi-mental ceramic-artistic factory – 5; Lomonosov State Porcelain Factory – 4; unknown plants – 30; pottery – 4. It is expected that a detailed description of the Brodskys’ porcelain collection will be highlighted in a separate study. Conclusions. The paper presents and highlights evidence and overviews archival information about the family of scholars O. I. and V. S. Brodskys. For the fi rst time these individuals have been honoured not only for their professional achievements but also for the cultural heritage they left to descendants. The biographical information, documents and information about V. S. Brodska-Sheremetieva are unique and are published for the fi rst time. The author gives an overview of the extensive family art collec-tion. Information about the Brodskys’ collection of books and Харків 2018 2 розділ paintings, the gramaphone record card index and tourist maps is also provided. Also, an overview of the family porcelain collec-tion held in the National Museum “Kyiv Art Gallery” is made. Our task is to bring forgotten names back from oblivion. We expect to take advantage of the museum world experience in preserving the names of owners and indicating pathways through which collection items fi nd their way in our museums on display cards or in museum albums.
