  • Presentation given at ICRI 2018 (International Conference for Research Infrastructures 2018), Vienna, Austria, 12-14 September 2018. The session in the strand on data had as its theme 'Research Infrastructures: ensuring trust and quality of data. What principles and practices are applicable?' The presentation tries to answer the following questions which were set by the chair: What principles and practices are relevant to RIs with regard to trustworthiness and quality of data? What is the role of RIs in increasing engagement with trusted, quality data? What are the policy implications of this? To do this it argues that 1) the FAIR principles have an important role to play; 2) that we need to examine the role of metadata, of controlled vocabularies and ontologies and of organisational standards in contributing towards quality and trust; and 3) that FAIR, quality and trust need to be supported by an ecosystem of policies, standards, services and robust organisations, including Research Infrastructures.
