- There are three issues to be examined in a study titled “Islam outskirts: Commodification Study and Articulation of Religious Identity of Outskirts Communities of Surabaya”, first, the process of commodification of religion, second, commodified forms of Religion, the third, the articulation of religious identity as the implications of the commodification of religion. The third issue is analyzed by qualitative descriptive approach and analyzed using flow models. The goal is to understand the meaning behind the action where its disclosure process requires a specific approach that not only capture from the outside but from the deepest and natural. This research resulted in the following findings: First, the process of commodification of religion be triggered by several factors: (a) the reality of society (b) the pattern of diversity of practical-pragmatic, (c) a survival strategy amid reference religiosity of society, (d) the role of religious leaders. Second. commodification form of religion that emerged are: (a) send a prayer together, (b) gathering qurban, (c) gathering umrah and Hajj, (d) Wali Songo pilgrimage. Third, the emergence of a sense of pride in being able to express religious moslem when through a “program” that created by religious leaders. Departing from the findings of this study recommends the following, first, necessary assistance and cultural enlightenment to the worshipers and religious leaders, in order not to get stuck on commercial practices that treat religion excessive withdrawal as a commodity. Second. depth study needs to be done about the commodification of relationships and impacts associated with the development of Islam.
