Należało sądzić, że odkrycie struktury DNA i zapisane w nim informacje jednoznacznie rozwiążą dylemat. Interakcje między naturą a wychowaniem są jednak o wiele bardziej złożone. Początki epigenetyki sięgają pierwszej połowy dziewiętnastego wieku. Jednym z założeń jego wersji ewolucji było dziedziczenie cech nabytych. Jednak późniejsze prace Mendla wykazały, że tym co istotnie napędza ewolucję są mutacje genomu, dziedziczone przez kolejnych potomków i podlegające następowej naturalnej selekcji w środowisku życia organizmu. Z teorii Darwina można wysnuć wniosek, że także sposób „trzymania się” wynika z jego interakcji ze środowiskiem. To co jest znamienne dla człowieka, w zakresie postawy ciała, jest jedynie sylwetką uchwyconą na określonym etapie filogenezy; to co wcześniej i to co później już jest inne. Zdając sobie sprawę z zagrożenia nadinterpretacją darwinizmu, można pokusić się o stwierdzenie, że posturogenezę modyfikują przypadkowe stresory środowiskowe. Badania połowy dwudziestego wieku cały proces jeszcze bardziej skomplikowały, wprowadzając trzeci element łączący dwa już znane: czynnik epigenetyczny. Mechanizmy ewolucji, oparty na genomie i epigenomie, umożliwia permanentną adaptację gatunku ludzkiego do warunków życia, a jednostki do bezpośredniego środowiska. Zmieniając więc tryb życia, skutecznie wpływamy na jakość egzystencji i następowego potomstwa. Pozwala to odpowiedzialność za fizyczny stan jednostki przesunąć z genomu na epigenom, bowiem podlega on modyfikacji wskutek naszych świadomych działań. Summary The discussion on whether genes or upbringing have decisive influence on a human being has a long history. The discovery of DNA structure and information it contained was supposed to solve that dilemma once and for all. However, interactions between nature and upbringing are much more complex. The beginnings of epigenetics are dated back to the nineteenth century. One of its concepts of evolutionary theory was inheritance of acquired characteristics. Nevertheless, the later work of Gregor Mendel proved that what in fact influences evolution is genome mutation, inherited by offspring and later undergoing natural selection in an organism’s environment. The Darwin’s theory allows to conclude that also body posture results from an individual’s interaction with the environment. What is symptomatic for an individual, as far as human body posture is concerned, is only the posture characteristics captured on a specific stage of its phylogeny; what had been before and comes after it, is different. Although there is a danger of overinterpretation in Darwinism, one may attempt to claim that posture development is modified by random environmental stress factors. Research of the twentieth century have complicated this process even more, introducing the third element: epigenetic factor, linking the previous two, already known ones. Mechanisms of evolution, based on genome and epigenome, enables human species to adapt to living conditions, and an individual – to a direct environment. Therefore by changing the way of life one influences the quality of existence of their offspring. This allows for shifting the responsibility for an individual’s physical condition from genome to epigenome, since the latter undergoes modifications resulting from one’s conscious actions.
