  • For the successful fulfilment of the duties of the National Guard of Ukraine (NGU) during the anti-terroristic operation, it is necessary to improve professional skills and enhance staff comprehensive training, prevent any adverse events and crimes in military groups. One of the main reasons of a significant number of non-battle, or accidental losses among the military is alcohol and drug abuse. This is determined by a range of medico-psycho-social reasons, which are not sensitive to preventive measures, carried out by the NGU. The use of strong substances may be caused by various factors of social, moral, environmental, psychological, psychophysiological, pathological and other nature. Therefore, the essential measures to fight this problem should be focused on prevention. The paper discusses in detail nearly all the areas of preventive activities with the military and singles out essential forms of addictive behaviour prevention among the militaries, which are given in the table with a focus on the methods of prevention. Major measures of prevention must be mainly psychological, since the abuse of psychoactive substances is primarily a problem of the personal choice. It is noted that the main principles of preventing alcohol and drug abuse in the National Guard of Ukraine must be holistic, systemic, psychological techniques of influencing a military person, consistency, basis on common human values and continuity. It is required to apply a differentiating approach to different subjects of prevention depending on their age, category, life experience etc.; the development and introduction of advanced technologies of preventing addictive behaviour; preventive activities against addictive behaviour depending on the object of prevention (officers with no special psychological background cannot use psychological prevention forms). Not all the prevention areas (information, social, emotional developing, alternative, educational training, spiritual and personal) may be equally effective in the National Guard of Ukraine. each of them has their opportunities and restrictions depending on the category, age, personal features, and life experience of the military people.
