- The corals that form the structure of great reef ecosystem lives in close association with an endosymbiont - Zooxanthallae, which gives coral its colouration ,with the specific colour depending on its specific clad. Increasing oceanic acidification due to rise in carbon dioxide levels impinge a thermal stress which causes corals to expel this endosymbiont, resulting in loss of colour.
