- The article proves that private charitable activities and voluntary assistance of individuals and associations of different types and focus were important for stimulating the teachers’ work in Ukraine in the second half of the XIXth – at the beginning of the XXth century. It has been established that free public organizations that were found at the end of the XIXth century and functioned in Kyiv, Kharkiv and other cities provided money and other types of assistance to poor teachers (former and in work). It has been revealed that Kyiv societies were important for stimulating the teachers’ work. They were the Kyiv Literacy Society, where an information desk was found, the Society of mutual assistance to teachers in work and former ones of elementary public schools of the Kyiv Province, Kyiv Regional Professional Teaching Union and others like that. It has been determined that some Kharkiv associations also provided voluntary assistance to workers in the field of education. They were the Kharkiv Association of Teachers, which included only secondary school teachers, the Kharkiv Society of Mutual Assistance to Teachers, the foundation of which was initiated by the teacher of the Kharkiv Nonclassical Secondary School I. Vlasovsky. The activity of these societies contributed to improving the material well-being and raising teachers’ professional level.
