- This study aims to examine the impact of Sabo dam development policy on social economic changes of the community surrounding Mt. Merapi.This research involved 789 respondents living in twenty villages in four regencies (Sleman, Magelang, Klaten and Boyolali). The multiple regression analysis and the percentage result of this study show that Sabo development and sand mining activities had a partially positive impact on the social economic changes in the community surrounding Mt. Merapi. Sabo had not given equal benefits to the entire community yet. The advantages benefited mostly men who worked as farmers, with high education levels and incomes, had fixed monthly incomes, acted as the heads of family and the breadwinners, and owned houses. Similarly, sand mining activity generally benefited older men, with high education levels and incomes,worked as laborers, farmers, or entrepreneurs, had fixed monthly income, acted as the heads of family and the breadwinners of the family
