  • Abstract: Analyzing about discourse is an attractive activity in linguistics, besides analyzing each word by reading novel it is also could be used in analyzing magazine, TV story or many others media. In this case the researchers analyze word to found some missed word and elliptical study used by novel “a little brown notebook write by Charlotte Bronte. The analyze shows that this novel used many term of substitution and ellipsis. The researcher found many terminologies about discourse especially in substitution and ellipsis analysis. Substitution contrary to the reference is a relation in syntax rather than meaning. In another word it is mostly a grammatical relation: so three types of substitution, nominal, verbal, and clausal are defined grammatically rather than semantically. The result of this analysis has shown many missing word that categorized in ellipsis and substitution that reader never known. Yet, looking at the form of the novel sentence that is also a usual word always use in making story, there is a tendency of ambivalence. It is possible that analysis employed in the novel can be used to analyze meaning and explanation of each word.Keywords: Discourse, Ellipsis, Substitution, A little brown Notebook, Charlotte Bronte.
