- Abstract: in accordance with interview and observation, most of the students feel that Mandarin is a difficult subject because the teacher only asks the students to memorize the Mandarin characters. The teacher has not given the effective ways to memorize the Mandarin characters yet. This research is aimed at measuring the effectiveness of Mandarin characters comprehension through the history of Mandarin characters. This research uses Contextual Teaching and Learning in order to the students are able to connect their academic knowledge with their own social life.
