Learning that is dominated by face-to-face learning must turn into online learning. Changes in teaching and learning patterns will certainly never be separated from the role of the teacher. Professional teachers will be reflected in the implementation of the dedication of tasks marked by expertise in both material and method. The teacher's role in the implementation of online learning must be creative and willing to innovate in order to be able to foster student interest in learning so that learning objectives can be achieved. This study aims to determine whether the professional competence of English teachers affects the learning interest of students in grades VII-I of SMP N 1 Sukoharjo in the 2020/2021 academic year. The research design used in this study is a qualitative descriptive research design. This research was conducted at SMP N 1 Sukoharjo for the 2020/2021 academic year. The sample in this study was an English teacher of class VII and 32 students of class VII-I SMP N 1 Sukohrjo. Instruments to collect data are questionnaires, interviews and observations. The results of this study indicate that the seventh grade English teacher's professional competence in online learning at SMP N 1 Sukoharjo is shown that the teacher has quite good professional competence, the teacher's pedagogic competence is quite good, then the teacher's professional competence is quite good, then the teacher's social competence is quite good, and the teacher's personality competence is very good. The professional competence of the teacher has an effect on students' interest in learning. With this it can be concluded that the English teacher has a fairly good professional competence in online learning, this affects the learning interest of class VII-I students at SMP N 1 Sukoharjo.
