- The aim of the present research was to describe students’ ability of SMP N 1 Sekampung at VII grade in 2014/2015 academic year in writing poetry based on visual media. The research method that was used was descriptive method. Data collecting technique that was used is writing test technique. Based on the result of data analysis it obtained (a) the theme aspect was good, the average is 79, (b) the structure aspect of the line and stanza is good with the average is 90, (c) the rima aspect was enough with the average was 55, (d) the language style aspect is enough with the average 53, (e) the diction aspect was good with the average is 91, and (f) the message aspect is good with the average is 79.Masalah dalam penelitian ini adalah bagaimanakah kemampuan menulis puisi berdasarkan media visual. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mendeskripsikan kemampuan siswa kelas VII SMP Negeri 1 Sekampung tahun pelajaran 2014/2015 dalam menulis puisi berdasarkan media visual. Metode penelitian yang digunakan adalah metode deskriptif.Teknik pengumpulan data yang digunakan adalah teknik tes tertulis.Berdasarkan hasil analisis data diperoleh nilai (a) aspek tema tergolong baik, yakni dengan rata-rata 79, (b) aspek struktur baris dan bait tergolong baik dengan rata-rata 90, (c) aspek rima tergolong cukup dengan rata-rata 55, (d) aspek gaya bahasa tergolong cukup dengan rata-rata 53, (d) aspek diksi tergolong baik sekali dengan rata-rata 91, dan (e) aspek amanat tergolong baik dengan rata-rata 79. Kata kunci: kemampuan, media visual, menulis.
