First Advisor: Hartono, S.S, M.Pd., Second Advisor : Dr. Sugeng Purwanto, M.A. Key words: Picture Strip Story, Writing Picture Strip Story is one of the media which was used in the school to improve students’ ability in writing recount text. The purpose of this study is to know the effectiveness of using picture strip story to improve students’ ability in writing recount text of eighth graders of SMP N 20 Semarang. The writer used quasi experimental design. In this study, the writer has done some steps they are pre-test, treatment and post-test. The writer analyzed the data by using independent sample t-test formula. The pre-test result of control class and experimental class were 55.74 and 55.87. It proved that the students’ writing skill before given the treatments was poor. after that the writer gave five time treatments to experimental class. The post test result showed that the experimental class got higher score than control class 68.52 > 60.39. The result showed that sig. (2-tailed) 0.000 was less than 0.05. It means that the treatment improve students’ writing ability in recount text. Based on the result above, it was proved that the students’ writi ng skill score by using picture strip story was better. It could be said that teaching writing by using picture strip story can improve the students’ writing ability.
