  • The reason for individual appraisal in school is based on the belief in the right of children to an education uniquely suited to their needs, interest, and abilities. Although educators have always known that children differ from one another, their acknowledgment of desireability of differences is a more recent phenomenon . This recent emphasis on individuality and the right of children to an education uniquely appropriate for them forces the school to seek ways of identifying the direction and extent of pupil differences. Appraisal should be built primarily for the purpose of predicting student's behavior. Appraisal practices involve the study of both individuals and their environments. Counseling an individual need not be delayed until appraisal data are collected. Appraisal data can be introduced in counseling when the client expresses some need for appraisal information. The fundamental purpose of engaging in collecting appraisal data is to increase self-understanding and wise decision making. Appraisal data must be properly safeguarded. Appraisal data and appraisal measuring are to keep confidential and should not be disclosed to individuals not entitled to such information.
