Linguistics</subject><description>This research discussed the adjacency pairs and preference structure of response in thesis examination presentation. The objective of this research is to identify and analyze the adjacency pairs and preference structure in thesis examination presentation. Besides, the contexts of response are also analyzed. The researcher used theory of Schegloff and Sack (1973) and Levinson (1983). This research used qualitative method. The data source of this research is video transcription of the interaction between the examiner and the examinee on the second session of thesis examination presentation in Universitas Teknokrat Indonesia. The data were the utterances indicated as adjacency pairs from the transcription based on transcription concept by Flowerdew (2013). This research found 128 data from two participants; 74 data for the participant who succeed and 54 data for the participant who failed in doing thesis examination presentation. Besides, eight types of adjacency pairs used by two participants in thesis examination presentation are greeting-greeting 4 data, question-answer 79 data, request-acceptance/refusal 28 data, summon-answer 4 data, assessment-agreement/disagreement 5 data, farewell-farewell 2 data, telling-acceptance 3 data and announcement-acknowledgement 2 data. All data found followed up by the context of response. Adjacency pairs sequence that mostly appear in thesis examination presentation is question-answer sequence of adjacency pairs with total 79 data from 128 data. Meanwhile, for the type of adjacency pairs that did not appear in thesis examination presentation is apology-acceptance/refusal. It is necessarily to understand about adjacency pairs because by understanding adjacency pairs, we can minimize the unexpected response. Besides, we can also avoid the failure in responding the prior speaker. Therefore, we could have good comprehension on context and content in order to make the conversation runs well.</description><publisher>Indonesian Library of Teknokrat Universities</publisher><date>2018-10-25</date><type>Thesis:Thesis</type><type>PeerReview:PeerReviewed</type><type>Book:Book</type><language>eng</language><identifier>http://repository.teknokrat.ac.id/981/1/8.%20ABSTRACT.pdf</identifier><type>Book:Book</type><language>eng</language><identifier>http://repository.teknokrat.ac.id/981/2/16.%20REFERENCES.pdf</identifier><type>Book:Book</type><language>eng</language><identifier>http://repository.teknokrat.ac.id/981/3/CHAPTER%20ONE.docx</identifier><identifier> Nanda, Herliza Dwi (2018) Adjacency Pairs in Thesis Examination Presentation.
