This research is aimed at examining the function of lecturer’s code switching in an
EFL (English as Foreign Language) classroom of university level. Code switching
meant as the changing of two or more languages in the same utterance or
conversation. Then, code switching can be use as lecturer strategy in teaching an
EFL classroom.
The researcher used qualitative method as the method of this research. This
method was supported by observation as data collecting technique. And to analyze
the data, the researcher applied Gumperz’s (1982) theory. The subject of this
research who was chosen based on the criteria made by the researcher is lecturer
of EFB (English For Business) classroom of Universitas Teknokrat Indonesia.
The data are the utterances from the lecturer which was transcribed into sentences
based on the transcription concept by Flower dew (2013).
As the conclusion, this study revealed six functions of code switching performed
by the lecturer namely reiteration, message qualification, interjection or sentence
filler, personalization versus objectivization, quotation and addressee
specification. In reiteration the researcher found 44 data, message qualification 55
data, interjection or sentence filler 110 data, personalization versus objectivization
60 data, quotation 4 data, and the last is addressee specification with 34 data. By
the finding of this function, this study showed that code switching in this EFL
classroom seems not only to be unavoidable but necessary due to students’
competence in learning English which was still low.
