  • Pronunciation is the way on how to utter a word regardless the letters which formed and it closely linked to the study of phonetics and phonology. One of the most important part that should be concerned in communicating by using foreign language is pronunciation. However, English pronunciation is considered difficult by Indonesian, the difficulties are caused by the fact that irregular spelling of the English language. The purpose of this research is to identify the vowel sounds that are mispronounced in pronouncing English vowels using General American accent by the second semester students of English Literature and to draw the pattern of pronunciation error occurred. The researcher used purposive sampling and qualita-tive method. In this research, the participants were selected based on require-ments. There are 4 Students of Universitas Teknokrat Indonesia majoring English Literature as the participants. By analyzing the data, it can be concluded that there are 11 monophthong sounds which are mispronounced by the first year students of English Literature. They are /i:/, /ɪ/, /e/, /æ/, /ʌ/, /ɒ/, /ɔː/, /ʊ/, /uː/, /ɜː/, and /ə/. There are six out of eight diphthong sounds that are mispronounced by the partici-pants; /eɪ/, /aʊ/, /oʊ/, /ɪə/, /eə/, and /ʊə/. Meanwhile in triphthong sounds, the re-searcher found four of five triphthong sounds are incorrectly pronounced by the participants. Those sounds are; /eɪ.ə/, /aɪə/, /ɔɪ.ə/, and /aʊə/. Furthermore, the types of error and the pattern occur in pronouncing English vowels are substitution and insertion.
