  • This final report analy sis of the effect of excitation current changes on the anchor current and power factor on the three phase sync motor. The biggest advantage of the synchronous motor itself is that its power factor can be adjusted by setting the excitation current on the rotor field. When excitation currents are raised beyond their normal excitation, the power factor, as measured at the motor terminal becomes leading because the sync motor with excitation produces more reactive power. By operating a synchronous motor in a leading power factor, the system power factor can be increased and can improve the voltage drop. If the excitation is less than its normal excitation, the motor power factor becomes lagging and will attract the reactive power of the system. The greater the value of excitation current given the value of the anchor current will be smaller while the greater the power factor.
