  • Surfactant is an active substance that the surface which can reduce the interfacial tension of oil water. Most of surfactants are widely used anionic surfactant Linear Alkylbenzena Sulphonate (LABS) which are synthesized from petroleum. At the time of this Surfactant Methyl Ester Sulfonate (MES) that is being developed. Surfactants can be produced from Fatty Acid Methyl Esters (FAME) as a raw material. The purpose of this research is to make the surfactant MES made from raw FAME with sodium metabisulfite as the sulfonation agent and calcium oxide as a catalyst. The effects of the time and the moles reactant ratio that been reviewed in the process of sulfonation as a variety of which will be a discussion in this study. The process of sulfonation done for 3 hours with the ratio moles 1:1,25; 1:1,5; 1:1,75 and the temperature is around 90°C. The result of research suggests that the time and the moles reactant ratio influence of the quality of produced surfactant. The best surfactant obtained from the reactant moles ratio 1:1,75 Mole ratio of reactant 1: 1.75 with average acid number 0.74 mg NaOH/g to 1.48 mg NaOH/g, iodine number 18.65 mg I/g to 22.93 and surface tension test 9.62 N/m up to 11,76 N/m.
