- One of the effort to increase the value of CPO by converting the oil into surfactant MES. The purpose of this study to determine the effect variations of temperature and longer reaction sulfonation. Conversion of oil into the MES is begun by esterification and transesterification process to produce methyl esters. Next, methyl ester is sulfonated using a sulfonating agent NaHSO3, neutralized by sodium hydroxide and separated by a vacuum pump. The reaction temperature and reaction time on sulfonation process was varied to determine its effect on the quality of the produced MES. Variations include 70 ° C, 3 hours (MES 1), 70 ° C, 1.5 hours (MES 2), 80 ° C, 3 hours (MES 3), 80 ° C, 1.5 hours (MES 4) and 90 ° C, 3 hours (MES 5 ), 90 ° C, 1.5 hours (MES 6). MES produced is tested ability to lower the surface tension of water. The concentration used was 0.2, 0.4, 0.6, 0.8 and 1% by weight / volume of water. The test results produced MES product showed different ability in lowering the surface tension that is affected by temperature. MES 6 has the highest capability in lowering the water level to reach 24.13 dyne / cm at a concentration of 1%, and has a percent yield of 24.21%. In order to get the best temperature of 900 C with a reaction time of 1.5 hours.
