The purpose of this research is to make CMC from water hyacinth which is still less utilization as well get optimum conditions of solvent and sodium acetate to the CMC resulted. In this research, making CMC from water hyacinth is done by the process of alkalization and karboksimetilation. The first step cellulose hyacinth mixed with a solvent mixture of propanol-butanol using a variety of solventpropanol-butanol (20:80, 50:50, 80:20) and then alkalization using 10% NaOHsolution. The next step is karboksimetilasi reaction between the alkali cellulose and sodium chloroacetic (ClCH2COONa) with variations ClCH2COONa (9 grams, 12 grams, 15 grams.) The analysis conducted in this study is the degree of substitution, pH, viscosity, NaCl concentration and purity. In this research, it is gotten that the CMC with optimum conditions on the composition of propanol-butanol 20:80 solvent with the degree of substitution of 0.92, pH 7.7, viscosity 9, purity of 96.9% and a weight of 9 grams ClCH2COONa with the highest degree of substitution of 0.76 pH 7.2, 8 viscosity and purity of 96.95%.
