- Django Unchained, sebuah film yang disutradarai dan diproduseri oleh Quentin Tarantino di tahun 2012, berisikan dialog-dialog yang mengandung derogatory terms yang cenderung bersifat ofensif. Meski begitu, istilah-istilah tersebut tidak muncul dalam alih bahasa Indonesia film ini—istilah-istilah ini seringkali diterjemahkan menggunakan padanan yang lebih umum. Penelitian ini membahas mengenai dampak penerjemahan derogatory terms dalam film Django Unchained. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk memaparkan dampak penerjemahan derogatory terms terhadap jarak sosial yang dipengaruhi oleh dua prosedur penerjemahan—reduksi dan kompensasi. Prosedur penerjemahan yang digunakan dapat mendekatkan jarak sosial antar tokoh dan menjauhkan jarak sosial antar tokoh. Selain itu, derogatory terms yang digunakan cenderung berkonotasi negatif. Prosedur penerjemahan yang digunakan menggeser konotasi negatif ini menjadi positif dan netral dalam alih bahasa Indonesia film Django Unchained. Kata kunci: derogatory terms, Django Unchained, jarak sosial, konotasi, pergeseran. ‘Django Unchained’, a film directed and produced by Quentin Tarantino in 2012, employs dialogues with a great number of derogatory terms, which some might find offensive. Those words, however, are not presented in the Indonesian subtitle—most of the time, those words are replaced by more general terms. This research examines the impacts of derogatory terms translation in ‘Django Unchained’. The purpose of this research is to show the impacts of derogatory terms translation on social distance between characters as influenced by two translation procedures—reduction and compensation. The procedures applied result in a closer or more distant relation between characters. The use of derogatory terms contains negative connotations. The translation procedures applied result in the changing of negative connotations, which is shifted into positive and neutral in the Indonesian subtitle.
