Comparison of Nasal Index in Malaysian Malay, Chinese and Indian Female Students of Padjadjaran University

  • Nasal index is a comparison of nasal breadth and nasal height. The differences of nasal index can be affected by race. The aim of this research is to compare the nasal index in Malaysian Malay, Chinese and Indian female students of UNPAD. The type of this research method was a descriptive analytical comparative approach with analytical cross sectional. The method that used to choose sample is by stratified random sampling from population of Malaysian female students from Faculty of Medicine, Faculty of Dentistry and Faculty of Pharmacy year 2000-2014. Total samples are eighty two female students who consisted of twenty one Malay, nineteen Chinese and forty two Indian. Nasal breadth and nasal height are measured by digital vernier caliper. Then, the nasal index is calculated. The nasal index is then described and analyzed by Kruksal-Wallis test and Mann-Whitney U test. The result of the mean of nasal index for Malay (82.5), Chinese (79.5) and Indian (72.5) with Kruskal-Wallis test shows the result of a significant difference between Malaysian Malay, Chinese, Indian female students of Padjajaran University; Mann- Whitney U test’s result did not show a significant difference between Malaysian Malay and Chinese female students of Padjajaran University. As a conclusion, there is a significant difference in nasal index between Malaysian’s Malay, Chinese and Indian female students of Padjadjaran University.
