DESCRIPTION OF SUPERNUMERARY TEETH OF PATIENTS VISITING RSGM UNPAD BASED ON LOCATION AND GENDER USING PANORAMIC RADIOGRAPHY IN YEAR 2014

  • Supernumerary teeth are a developmental anomaly in which there is a presence of additional teeth to the normal series of dentition. The objective of this study is to describe the supernumerary teeth among patients visiting RSGM UNPAD, Bandung through panoramic radiography in year 2014 based on gender and location. The method of research used was descriptive study, and the technique of sampling used was purposive sampling. All panoramic radiographs in year 2014 from Radiology Department of RSGM UNPAD, Bandung were observed. Criteria of panoramic radiographs chosen were from the age of 12-55 years old and having supernumerary teeth. The data were then calculated and analyzed based on location of supernumerary teeth and the gender involved. The research result shows 62 out of 2520 panoramic radiographs presented with supernumerary teeth, which yields a percentage of 2.46%. The male to female ratio was same that was 1:1. The greatest proportion of supernumerary teeth was found in maxilla (53.23%). According to the location, parapremolar has the highest percentage that was 44.87%, followed by mesiodens (41.03%), distomolar (7.69%) and paramolar (6.41%). In conclusion, there was no significant difference in the occurrence of supernumerary teeth based on gender. In descending order, supernumerary teeth were most commonly found at parapremolar, followed by mesiodens, distomolar and lastly, paramolar. Keywords: Supernumerary teeth, panoramic radiography
