THE PALATAL RUGAE PATTERN OF CHINESE AND INDIAN FEMALES IN FKG UNPAD

  • Palatal rugae are in favour of forensic odontologists as one of the simple methods ultilized in human identification due to its transverse ridges, stable in nature and uniqueness. The aim of this research is to determine the difference between Fakultas Kedokteran Gigi Universitas Padjadjaran Chinese and Indian females’ palatal rugae pattern and to provide information for the need of forensic odontology. A total of 50 female samples consist of 30 Chinese and 20 Indian were enrolled in this descriptive analytic study using purposive sampling method. Impressions of the upper jaws were taken and cast with dental stone. The palatal rugae pattern was identified according to Martin dos Santos classification. The most frequent palatal rugae pattern in Chinese females was curve form (41.00%), followed by line form (23.85%) and sinuous form (15.90%). On the other hand, sinuous form (28.83%) was predominantly found in Indian females, followed by line form (23.93%) and curve form (20.25%). Thus, there was a difference between palatal rugae pattern and ethnicity, curve forms being more common in Chinese females whereas sinuous forms were more common in Indian females.
