The Analysis of Grice’s Maxims in Talk Show Oprah Winfrey: Oprah Interviews

- This study tries to analyze the Grice’s maxims and flouting maxims that are found in talk show Oprah Winfrey Show: Oprah Interviews J.K. Rowling. The reason why the researcher chooses this study because in the conversation, especially in the reality, conversational maxim is important to reach the effective communication. The research problems of this study are how maxims are obeyed and what maxims are flouted based on J.K. Rowling utterance. It is qualitative study which focuses on the Grice’s maxims. The data of this research is Oprah Winfrey Show: Oprah Interviews J.K. Rowling transcript. The result, there are two points; first, Rowling obeys three types of maxim; maxim of quantity is obeyed by Rowling in replying Winfrey’s questions and by giving brief answers, maxim of quality is obeyed by saying something that she believes is right, and maxim of relation is obeyed by giving explanation which relevant with Winfrey’s question. Second, the four types of maxims; maxim of quantity, maxim of quality, maxim of relation, and maxim of manner, occur to have been flouted by Rowling. The most commonly flouted is maxim of quantity because Rowling giving redundant information which the implicature shows that Rowling wants Winfrey to understand and be clear with her answer. Maxim of quality is flouted by giving inconsistent answer, maxim of relation is flouted by giving irrelevant answer, and maxim of manner is flouted by giving ambiguous answer.
