- This reseach described that students’ ability in writing hortatory text at grade X MA Swasta Darussalam Kampung Banjir Kabupaten Padang Lawas Utara. The reseacher discovered some of grade X MA Swasta Darussalam Kampung Banjir Kabupaten Padang Lawas Utara students have difficulties in writing hortatory text. The difficulties are: 1) lack of vocabulary, 2) do not understand grammar, and 3) do not know the generic structure of hortatory text. The formulation of this reseach was how is sudents ability in writing hortatory text at grade X MA Swasta Darussalam Kampung Banjir Kabupaten Padang Lawas Utara?. Therefore, the purpose of this reseach is to know students’ ability in writing hortatory text at grade X MA Swasta Darussalam Kampung Banjir Kabupaten Padang Lawas Utara. The methodology of this reseach was quantitative reseach with descriptive method. The population of this reseach was grade X of MA Swasta Darussalam Kampung Banjir Kabupaten Padang Lawas Utara. The sample of the reseach was 25 students (8 students from X-1, 9 students from X-2, and 8 students from X-3). The reseacher used random sampling technique to select the sample. To collect the data, the reseacher used test. To analyze the data, the reseacher used math formula such as: mean, median, and modus. The reseacher used Ztest in hypothesis testing. The students’ ability in writing hortatory text at grade X MA Swasta Darussalam Kampung Banjir Kabupaten Padang Lawas Utara was categorized into high category. It can be seen from mean score which has gotten from students’ test score, it was 62.4. After the resecher did hypothesis testing, the hypothesis was accepted because Zcount Ztable( 9.13 0.3264) by level of significant 0.05 or 5%.
